GMKtec EVO-X2 for Local AI: Specs, Price and Verdict

·8 min readBy Hans Kuepper · Founder of PromptQuorum · Discovery engine for open-weight & open-source AI

The GMKtec EVO-X2 is a compact Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mini PC with up to 128 GB of unified memory for people who want a 100B-class local model box without a workstation vendor's support. The decisive caveat is price: GMKtec's own page and Amazon-based reports differ by well over $1,000 for similar 128 GB configurations, so check the live listing before ordering.

Key Takeaways

  • Platform: Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with Radeon 8060S and soldered LPDDR5X-8000 in 64 GB or 128 GB, the same chip as other Strix Halo mini PCs.
  • Price: GMKtec's own page and a July 2026 Notebookcheck report on Amazon disagree for 128 GB / 2 TB; the price table lists both with sources.
  • Evidence gap: the independent reviews we could read cover the 64 GB unit, and the only EVO-X2 versus DGX Spark comparison was run by GMKtec itself.
  • Trade-offs: a single 2.5G Ethernet port and USB4 rather than a fast cluster fabric, and an external 230 W power adapter.
  • Maintenance: Notebookcheck's review criticised limited fan control and more complicated maintenance.

The GMKtec EVO-X2 is a mini PC built around the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with up to 128 GB of soldered LPDDR5X-8000, launched in April 2025 according to Notebookcheck. GMKtec's own store and third-party reports disagree widely on its US price, so this page lists each figure with its source instead of picking one. PromptQuorum has not tested this machine; the page rests on the vendor specification and third-party reports.

GMKtec EVO-X2 for Local AI: Specs, Price and Verdict

What the GMKtec EVO-X2 Is

The EVO-X2 is a mini PC from GMKtec, built on AMD's Ryzen AI Max+ 395 "Strix Halo" processor. Notebookcheck reported the launch on 2025-04-07 as a single 128 GB / 2 TB configuration priced at CNY 14,999 (about $2,060) for pre-order in China, with no global launch announced at that time.

GMKtec now sells it in 64 GB and 128 GB memory options with Windows 11 Pro or Ubuntu on its official product page. In July 2026, Notebookcheck reported a 128 GB / 1 TB variant and stated that the 128 GB model can assign up to 96 GB to the integrated GPU.

What Independent Reports Show

We found no independent LLM-speed test of the 128 GB EVO-X2 that we could read. Tom's Hardware reviewed it under the headline "Compact Strix Halo Powerhouse", but only the headline loaded for us, so we do not quote its figures or verdict.

Notebookcheck's review (published 2025-09-05, 64 GB / 1 TB unit) concluded the machine "joins the ranks of the best mini PCs currently available in 2025", calling cooling efficient and the system comparatively quiet and cool. It criticised limited fan control and more complicated maintenance. The summary page we read carried no benchmark, noise or power figures.

GMKtec itself ran a comparison against the NVIDIA DGX Spark on Llama 3.3 70B, Qwen3 Coder, GPT-OSS 20B and Qwen3 0.6B and said the EVO-X2 led on token speed and first-response latency; Notebookcheck's report (2025-11-10) gave no figures and noted this was a vendor test. Notebookcheck's author still saw the DGX Spark as stronger for large-model, high-throughput work. For an independent Spark versus Strix Halo test on AMD's own Ryzen AI Halo, see our category comparison.

Who It Suits and Who Should Skip It

  • Suits: buyers who want the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and 128 GB in a small Windows or Ubuntu box and will buy only after the live price checks out.
  • Suits: users who accept consumer-brand support and a 1+2 year warranty in exchange for a lower possible price.
  • Skip: teams needing 192 GB or a business sales channel; compare the Framework Desktop and HP Z2 Mini G1a.
  • Skip: anyone planning multi-box clustering; this machine lists 2.5G Ethernet and USB4, not a 10GbE or 200 Gbps port.
  • Skip: buyers who need an independently measured tokens-per-second figure for this exact unit before paying, because we found none.

Alternatives in the Same Class

  • Minisforum MS-S1 MAX: same 395 chip, with dual 10GbE and a PCIe x16 slot (x4 electrically) per Minisforum and reviews.
  • Ryzen AI Halo: AMD's own 128 GB Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system, with one 10GbE port and an independent Spark comparison.
  • HP Z2 Mini G1a: the same platform in HP's workstation line, aimed at business purchasing.
  • Framework Desktop: a modular case with a 192 GB option on pre-order; GMKtec lists up to 128 GB.
  • DGX Spark: NVIDIA's CUDA system with 200 Gbps networking; see the category comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade the memory later?

No. GMKtec lists the LPDDR5X as onboard and non-upgradeable, so choose 64 GB or 128 GB at purchase. Storage can be expanded through the two M.2 slots.

Which operating systems does it ship with?

GMKtec's page lists Windows 11 Pro or Ubuntu. It does not say which model-serving software, if any, is preinstalled.

How many M.2 drives can it hold?

GMKtec lists two M.2 2280 slots, up to 8 TB each (16 TB total), PCIe Gen4 x4. SATA drives are not supported.

Does it support Wi-Fi 7?

Yes. GMKtec lists Wi-Fi 7 (RZ717, MT7925) and Bluetooth 5.4 alongside a 2.5G wired port.

Why does Notebookcheck mention 96 GB of VRAM?

Notebookcheck says the 128 GB model allows up to 96 GB to be assigned to the integrated GPU. It is shared system memory, not a separate pool.
