Get Whisper Notes
Whisper Notes installs like any Apple app, so no terminal is needed. There are two routes on the Mac: the App Store, which shares one purchase with iPhone and iPad, and a direct download from the website with its own licence.
Platform | Get It |
|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad (iOS 18+) | Whisper Notes on the App Store — $7.99 once (US store) |
| Mac, App Store build | Mac App Store — same $7.99 purchase as iPhone and iPad |
| Mac, direct download (DMG) | whispernotes.app — free up to 5,000 words a week, or $14 once |
| Website | whispernotes.app |
| Privacy policy | Whisper Notes privacy policy |
| Source code | None; the app is closed source |
Only the direct Mac download includes voice typing, Qwen3-ASR (beta), the command-line tool and the MCP server. The site lists no Windows, Android or Intel Mac version and says none is planned. The App Store seller is SmashMelon LLC; the website names no maker.

What Whisper Notes Is
Whisper Notes is a native transcription app, not a cloud service. The site describes it as running the same open-source Whisper models as OpenAI's Whisper, plus NVIDIA Parakeet and SenseVoice, on the Apple Neural Engine, with no Python or command line required.
It records from the Lock Screen, imports audio and video, and labels speakers. The Mac download from the website adds system-wide voice typing, recording of Zoom, Teams and Google Meet calls, and an on-device AI assistant. The site says it is "chosen by 70,000+ professionals", a vendor claim this review could not verify.
This review draws on the website, FAQ, privacy policy and changelog, and the App Store listing. It involved no hands-on testing, so accuracy, speed and stability are not rated here.
How to Get Started
Setup is an install, a first-run model download and a recording. The steps follow the FAQ and App Store listing.
- 1Install the app
Why it matters: Buy it on the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/whisper-notes-speech-to-text/id6447090616) for iPhone, iPad and Mac, or download the Mac version from [whispernotes.app](https://whispernotes.app/) and try it free. - 2Let the models download
Why it matters: The models download inside the app on first use; after that it works offline, and the listing says you can turn on airplane mode before you record. - 3Record or import audio
Why it matters: Record from the Lock Screen or the Action Button, share a memo from Voice Memos, or import audio and video from other apps. - 4Turn on speaker labels and export
Why it matters: Tap the speaker icon on a transcript, rename the speakers, and export TXT, SRT or VTT with timestamps and speaker names.
Features
The feature set centres on private transcription of recordings. Everything below comes from the website and App Store listing.
- Fast capture. Start recording from the Lock Screen, widgets, the Action Button or "Hey Siri", with no recording time limit.
- Import and share. Bring in audio and video from WhatsApp, Photos and Voice Memos, and extract subtitles from video.
- Speaker labels. On-device diarization with renamable speakers; rename a speaker once and the label updates throughout.
- Export. TXT, SRT and VTT with timestamps; the Mac app also saves Markdown files that an Obsidian vault can use.
- Shortcuts actions. Five actions, including Start Recording, Stop Recording and Transcribe Audio.
- Mac extras (website download). Hold Fn for system-wide voice typing, automatic meeting recording, summaries and chat with a local AI model (Gemma 4), and a command-line tool with a built-in MCP server.
Models and Hardware
You pick the model: Parakeet is the default, Whisper covers 100+ languages and SenseVoice targets Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Parakeet V3 supports 25 European languages. On iPhone, Apple Speech can also be chosen on iOS 26, and the Mac download offers Qwen3-ASR (beta, 30 languages, 16 GB of memory recommended).
It needs an iPhone 12 or newer on iOS 18, or any Apple silicon Mac; the site recommends 8 GB or more of memory for Whisper Large V3 Turbo. The developer reports Parakeet transcribing 35 minutes in about 18 seconds on an M4 Pro, a 6.32% word error rate, and about 18 seconds for 5 minutes on an iPhone 15. These are the vendor's own tests and were not reproduced.
Privacy, License and Cost
The privacy policy says your voice, transcripts and user data never leave your device. It states the app uses no analytics or tracking, collects and transmits no personal data, and that the developer has no access to your audio. The FAQ adds that deleting the app deletes your recordings, so export what you need.
The models download inside the app, so the first run needs internet access. Sharing a transcript to another app is your choice and falls outside that promise. The code is not open, so these statements cannot be inspected, and this review did not examine network traffic.
It is a paid, proprietary product: $7.99 once in the US App Store, covering iPhone, iPad and the Mac App Store build, with no subscription or in-app purchases. The separate Mac download has a free tier of 5,000 words a week or a $14 licence. A refund can be requested in the app's settings.
Trade-Offs: Benefits vs. Limitations
Fully offline
- What it means in real use:

Who Should Use Whisper Notes
- People who transcribe on an iPhone. Lock Screen capture and Voice Memos sharing suit interviews and lectures.
- Subscription-averse Mac users. A one-time price replaces monthly transcription fees.
- Privacy-minded professionals. Journalists and researchers who cannot upload recordings can keep them on the device.
- Mac users who dictate. The website build adds hold-Fn voice typing in any app.
Who Should Not Use Whisper Notes
- Windows, Android and Intel Mac users. None is supported or planned.
- Owners of older iPhones. The iPhone 11 and older are not supported.
- Anyone who needs live captions. It transcribes after you stop recording.
- People who require open source. The code is closed; look at the open alternatives in the table.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it work in airplane mode?
Yes, once the models are downloaded; the App Store description says to turn on airplane mode before recording and notes that it works exactly the same.
Is the Mac app the same purchase as the iPhone app?
The App Store purchase covers iPhone, iPad and the Mac App Store build. The direct Mac download is separate: free up to 5,000 words a week, or $14 once.
Does it summarize transcripts?
On the Mac, after you download an on-device model, yes. On iPhone there are no AI summaries yet, and you copy the text into another tool.
Does it transcribe in real time?
No. Text appears gradually during transcription, but only after you finish recording.
Who makes it?
The App Store lists SmashMelon LLC as seller. The website names no company or person.
Verdict
Whisper Notes is a good fit if you want private, subscription-free transcription on an iPhone or Apple silicon Mac: it installs like any app, labels speakers and keeps the audio on the device, by its own account.
The caveats are transparency and scope: closed source, no named maker on the website, speed and accuracy figures that are the vendor's own, and no live transcription or non-Apple platforms. Try the free Mac tier before buying.
